Serena Shimmywear at Orientale Tea Hafla

Serena Shimmywear was at the Orientale Tea Hafla hosted by Bella Raks Sharqi, on 5th April 2014...and what an afternoon it was! Guests were treated to a delicious high tea buffet spread and there were lots of mingling and dancing, not to mention shopping!

Here is Serena, and yes, she had to dance on that day besides managing her booth! And with the lovely Sumini who is ever so supportive!

More details can be found in our Facebook page here.

Serena is overwhelmed by the warm support from the lovely guests and dancers at the hafla. It is a promising beginning with more great things to come. We will endeavour to continue bringing in quality products sourced from across the globe and you can be sure, if Serena doesn't like it, it will not be sold at Serena Shimmywear! So please stay tuned for all your dance needs.

Until the next hafla!

Khaleegy Thobes

For those who are wondering what Khaleegy thobes are, they are bright oversized, overdresses that are worn without hip belts. These are worn when dancing Khaleegy, which is a style of dance and music from the Persian Gulf or Arabian Gulf region.  Traditionally, women would dance this in pairs or groups for their own entertainment at special events, such as weddings.  The Khaleegy thobe is also used as a prop in the dance by holding it in front like an apron and swinging it from side to side to catch the wind, or the sleeves would be used like a veil or a hood to frame the face. Common movements in the dance would be limping, gliding footwork, hair tosses, shoulder rolls, arm movements, hand shimmies and lots of spinning.

Serena Shimmywear has brought in a new shipment of Khaleey thobes, in many different colours! One size fits all though, and there may be cases where the thobe is much too long if you are a petite dancer. The thobe is longer at the back than the front and it is meant to trail behind you, but if you feel it is too long and you keep tripping over yourself, tuck the back mid-section of the thobe into a belt which you can wear underneath (or into the waistband of your skirt /pants during practise).  Just make sure there is allowance for you to hold the sleeve overhead and the back is not so short that your feet can be seen; you have to look like you are gliding in the dance.  Please try not to alter the thobe as it will mean removing the beautiful embroidery along the hem!

If you have more tips about Khaleegy costuming, please feel free to advise!

For individual close-up shots and details, please view Serena Shimmywear's Facebook page here.

Update: Some colours have sold out! Colours available: Black, maroon, sapphire (purple), red and jewel blue.

Egyptian Bellydance Costumes - Part 2 (Bedlah Sets)

Hello and happy weekend, everyone!

After a 2 week hiatus, we bring you the second installation of our Egyptian Bellydance Costumes: Bedlah Sets, otherwise known as the 2-piece bra and belt sets. Students who are just starting to perform on stage or those uninitiated in bellydance costuming, bedlah sets are worth considering as they are relatively more affordable than a full costume and are very versatile. Many different looks can be re-created with just a quick change of bottoms; chiffon circle skirts, mermaid skirts, straight skirts, harem pants..even jeans for modern shaabi numbers!

Here are the selections by Serena, just arrived!

Bedlah sets are priced at SGD 280 / USD 220. Skirts sold separately from SGD 25 / USD 20 onwards. For more pictures and measurements, please visit Serena Shimmywear's Facebook page here!

Turkish Hip Scarf and Costume Collections

Serena's recent trip to Istanbul in December resulted in her hauling back a selection of Turkish bellydance costumes and hip scarves!

For those who prefer something a little simpler, here is the collection of hip scarves from Turkey.  These are also a good weight like the Egyptian hip scarves, due to the heavy beads used, and are hand-made with good workmanship. Serena's favourite is the red velvet with the 'evil eye' glass beads because it is so quintessentially Turkish with the kitschy vibe!

Pre-packed in matching organza bags and priced at SGD35 each.

Turkish bellydance costumes are beautifully hand-sewn with lots of sequins, beads, diamante and crystals! Here are the selections still available for purchase, prices ranging from SGD390 to SGD490.

For more information, please view the Turkish Hip Scarf Collection at Serena Shimmywear's Facebook page here, and Turkish Bellydance Costumes here

Egyptian Hip Scarf Collection

Beautiful hip scarves made and imported from Egypt! Every bellydancer starts off with one of these. I was fortunate enough to receive one as a Christmas pressie from a close friend who introduced me to the beauty of oriental dance. It is something which I treasure and still wear till this day after 3 years of classes and workshops! So I can attest to the quality and workmanship. There is substantial weight to these hip scarves due to all that beading... all the better to train those hips for drum solos!

Serena Shimmywear's hip scarves are all pre-packed and presented in matching organza bags, priced at SGD35 each.
